Tips to Finding a Job If You’re Fresh Out of Law School

As a lawyer in training, one of the things you’re probably wondering about is how you’ll land that first job when you have little to no experience. A lot of the time, it’s possible to get a job before law school officially ends as some law firms actually do go out of their way to recruit new lawyers. This might easily happen to you but you need to be careful about jumping into the first firm that approaches you because there’s a chance that some of these firms might simply be looking for cheap labor to dump a lot of the hard work on.

This shouldn’t at all scare you as there are still many who would care about your progress in the legal system and you would have ample opportunity to grow and develop favorably. So even if you’re still in law school, here are a few tips to help you land a good job.

Start By Searching

If you spend some time online every day, you’d be surprised at how much you can achieve in your general job search. A lot of the time, firms that are looking to recruit would post these vacancies online. There are also many individual or corporate clients that might need services that can only be rendered by a qualified lawyer. You might not start out on a retainer and it could be a one-time thing but you will not only make money out of it but gain some experience.

Make it a habit to go online and find jobs in your city or area. A simple search query like “find a lawyer job in London”, or according to your city, could set you ahead.

Networking

This is another trusted way to find a job. Seek out events where you would find other lawyers and maybe law firms too and try to attend as many as you can. Also, while you’re there, remember you have an aim. Don’t just sit down and wait for a miracle. You don’t exactly have to be in everyone’s face but it’s important that you move around and talk to people, piquing their interest as you speak. If you can, offer your services to one or two people at the event. It’s important that you get your foot in the door some way or the other and then let other things follow.

Don’t Focus on Law Firms Alone

All firms require legal work. There is always a need for a lawyer so much that in some cases, many firms who have a very different core business have legal departments. There are many ways a lawyer can adequately function even in a sector that isn’t primarily legal. Seek out jobs with firms that may need lawyers and apply.

Don’t Stop Applying

Make sure you send out as many applications as you can. This doesn’t mean you should apply to every single place you can find or every place that needs a lawyer, but whatever it is you desire and you think would be a good fit for you, find as many firms as possible in that area and send out applications.

Always remember that jobs rarely find new lawyers. When you’re able to garner a wealth of experience, there’s a good chance that you will be sought after. However, until then, you have to do the searching.
